This Is Lorelei: Holo Boy review – sweet-sad songs from a new pearl of the US alt scene

Nate Amos, the mastermind behind Brooklyn-based duo Water From Your Eyes, has been quietly crafting left-field pop that's as wry as it is hypermodern. But what really sets him apart is his solo project This Is Lorelei, which has been gaining traction over the past few years. The duo's breakthrough came in 2023 with album Box for Buddy, Box for Star, but Amos himself has been working on this solo venture for even longer.

Amos's latest release is a compilation of re-recorded tracks from his extensive Bandcamp back catalogue, and it's a gentle folk-rock affair that deals in honeyed melancholy. These songs are brief, narratively vague, and touch on themes of regret, disappointment, and darkness. While they may not be as sonically bold as Amos's WFYE output, they showcase a knack for pleasingly diverting detail – see the chunky pop-punk bassline on "Name the Band" or the bright guitar twang on "Dreams Away."

In terms of stylistic influence, it's clear that Amos is drawing comparisons to indie-rock stalwart Alex G. While he may not be able to match G's lyrical punch, he certainly shares his knack for crafting catchy melodies and pleasing sonic textures.

This Is Lorelei isn't quite as compelling as Amos's other project – a more eclectic and avant-garde venture that showcases the singer-songwriter's full range of skills. But this collection of sweet-sad acoustic fare is still an enjoyable listen, and its opportunistic repackaging makes it a worthwhile addition to Amos's discography.

What's notable about this release is how it highlights Amos's ability to tap into a more introspective side of his songwriting. These re-recorded tracks feel like a natural extension of the themes and moods that have defined his solo work up until now. And while they may not be as bold or experimental as some of his other material, they're still a testament to Amos's skill as a songwriter and his ability to craft songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable.

Ultimately, This Is Lorelei is a pleasant surprise from an artist who has been quietly building a reputation for himself in the indie music scene. It may not be a game-changer, but it's certainly worth listening to – especially if you're a fan of Amos's work with Water From Your Eyes or his more experimental solo projects.

I'm so down for this new release from Nate Amos 🎶! I mean, the guy's been grinding out some amazing stuff on Bandcamp and it's awesome to see him sharing it with a wider audience. This Is Lorelei is like a warm hug for your ears - all gentle folk-rock vibes that just make you feel a little bit better about life 😊. The songwriting's still super strong, even if it's not as bold or experimental as his other stuff. And I love how this release shows off his ability to tap into a more introspective side of himself... it's like we're getting an extra slice of the Nate Amos pie 🍰!

i just got the new season of my favorite show and i'm so excited to dive in 🤩. anyway, i was thinking about this artist Nate Amos and his solo project This Is Lorelei. i mean, have you guys ever listened to Water From Your Eyes? they're like, really good too 🎶. what's the deal with re-recording old songs? is it just easier or something?

i also heard that he's been working on this project for a long time... that's cool, but kinda weird too 😂. i don't know if i'd want to listen to an entire album of old songs all over again. unless they're like, super different from the original ones 🤔.

anyway, i'm gonna check out his new release and see what it's all about 👍. thanks for the rec!

I just listened to this new album from Nate Amos and I'm totally vibing on the melancholy vibes 🎸🌫️. It's like he's tapping into that school stress we all feel sometimes, you know? 😅 Like, who hasn't written a song about regret or disappointment after a bad math test? 🤣 Anyway, I love how his songwriting is so honest and relatable – it's like he's speaking straight to our souls (or at least, my soul when I'm feeling down). The production is pretty chill too, with those catchy guitar riffs that just make you wanna hum along 🎶. And yeah, I can see the Alex G influence there, but Nate's got his own thing going on – it's like he's blending indie-rock with a hint of folkiness. Not as experimental as some of his other stuff, but hey, sometimes less is more, right? 🤔

omg i love nate amos!!! 🤩 he's so talented and underrated lol this compilation is giving me all the feels 🎶 his songwriting is just so personal and raw, it's like he's sharing a part of himself with us 🌟 and that guitar twang on "dreams away" is everything 🎸 i can see why he's drawing comparisons to alex g, but let's be real, nate has his own vibe going on 💁‍♀️ this isn't as experimental as some of his other stuff, but it's still super enjoyable and shows off his skill as a songwriter 🙌 totally worth checking out if you're a fan of wfye or his solo work 👍
