Finland’s Prime Minister Sanna Marin concedes election | CNN

Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin has conceded defeat in the country's parliamentary election. The opposition right-wing National Coalition Party (NCP) claimed victory, winning 48 of the 200 seats in parliament. Marin's Social Democrats came in third with 43 seats.

Marin, who is just 37 years old and one of the youngest prime ministers in the world, conceded defeat after a tightly fought contest. The NCP leader Petteri Orpo vowed to "fix Finland" and its economy, which he claims has been damaged by Marin's government.

Orpo will now have the first chance at forming a coalition to obtain a majority in parliament. Marin's era as prime minister is expected to end with this defeat.

Marin acknowledged that her party had gained support and more seats in parliament, but admitted they did not finish first. The young politician remains popular among many Finns, particularly young moderates, but has faced criticism at home for her partying and government spending.

The NCP's main goal is to reduce immigration from developing countries outside the European Union, a stance it shares with Marin's Social Democrats. However, Orpo accused Marin of eroding Finland's economic resilience at a time when Europe's energy crisis has hit the country hard.

Marin's foreign policy actions have been notable, particularly her push for NATO membership in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. That process is now almost complete, with Helsinki expected to join within days after all 30 Western defense alliance members approved the accession.

just went thru finland's election results and gotta say, 37 yrs old & still taking a hit from partying? 🤷‍♀️ seems like young politicians r getting a raw deal these days. anyway, Orpo might wanna work on more than just fixing finland's economy... how about fixing the country's reputation tho? 😒

Omg, I'm so surprised 🤯! Sanna Marin was like a rockstar as PM 😎 but it looks like her time in office has come to an end 😔. She's still super young, though - only 37 years old! 💁‍♀️ And I'm loving that she stuck up for Finland's NATO membership 👊, especially with Russia being all aggressive 🚫. Now we gotta see what Petteri Orpo does next 🤔... will he be able to "fix" Finland? 🤷‍♂️ Can't wait to find out! #NATOgoals #FinlandStrong #SannaMarin

😒 I gotta say, Sanna Marin's got some serious guts trying to lead Finland at just 37 years old... like, what if she's still figuring it out? 🤔 Still, can't help but feel that Orpo's gonna be all about cutting immigration and making Finland "safe" again, which is code for restricting who comes in... don't get me wrong, I'm all for being cautious, but we shouldn't forget our international connections. 💸 This energy crisis thing is a big deal too - hope they figure out some sustainable solutions ASAP. And NATO membership? Can't deny Marin's been proactive on that front... 🤝

omg i just saw that news about finland 🤯 i dont really understand whats going on with the economy but it sounds like petteri orpo is gonna try to fix some things 😬 what does "eroding economic resilience" even mean? isnt that just a fancy way of saying "i want to control who comes into my country"? 🤔 also i heard finland has been pushing for nato membership, thats kinda cool right? 🎉 but what does it all mean for the people living there? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 Finland's election result was kinda predictable, tbh 🙃. I mean, who doesn't see the NCP coming? They were like the 'anti-anything' party this whole time 🎯. Petteri Orpo's promise to 'fix Finland' is pretty vague tho... what does that even mean? 💸 Are they gonna cut back on services or just slash taxes and hope for the best? 🤷‍♂️ I'm still kinda disappointed in Sanna Marin, though - she's only 37 and already conceding defeat 🙈. I get that politics is tough, but it feels like she had more time to prove herself 🕰️. Guess we'll just have to wait and see how Orpo does with the whole coalition thing 🤔

OMG 😱 just can't believe Sanna Marin lost already 🤯 she was so young and full of energy, I loved watching her on TV 💁‍♀️ anyway guess that's politics for u, some people win & others lose 💔 think Orpo is gonna mess up Finland tho 😒 hope he fixes the economy tho it sounds like its been a disaster under Marin 👀 don't know what to expect now Helsinki joining NATO is kinda lit though 🎉 hope they can keep Europe safe 💕

🤔 I feel kinda bad for Sanna Marin... she was only 37 and already tried her hand at politics. She had some great ideas too, like that NATO membership thing 🙌 but I guess it wasn't enough to keep her in office. It's kinda sad because she was pretty popular among the young folks 😔. Maybe next time? The NCP is gonna have a tough job trying to fix Finland, though... there are some big economic problems they need to tackle 💸

🤔 so finland's got a new pm and it's like, not surprising tbh marin's been in power for like 4 yrs already and it's time for someone else to step up 🕰️ ncp's stance on immigration is weird tho like why does that even matter? shouldnt they be more worried about the energy crisis? 🤷‍♂️ plus orpo's all like he's gonna "fix" finland but what's his plan lol sounds like just more of the same old politics 📊 marin's still got a rep among young ppl tho so idk if that's a win or loss for her 😐

I just can't help but wonder what it says about our societies that a 37-year-old is deemed old enough to be considered "experienced" enough for the top spot in Finland's government. I mean, think about it, how did we even become adults? Is it really just a matter of time and age? 🤔 Does this say something about our values as a society that youth are not valued as much when they're taking on leadership roles? And what does this say about the quality of our education system if a young person like Sanna Marin is expected to lead a country, yet still struggles with partying and government spending? It's all just so... complicated. 🤷‍♂️

I'm still trying to wrap my head around Marin conceding defeat 🤯 She was only 37 and seemed like a rockstar in politics, but I guess youth can't guarantee everything 😅. The NCP's win is interesting though - Petteri Orpo's promise to "fix Finland" sounds pretty vague, what exactly does that mean? 🤔 And how will he tackle the economic issues that Marin's party admitted were problems? Still, it's good to see Helsinki joining NATO soon 🚀 Hopefully, Orpo can live up to expectations and bring stability to Finland. But on a more personal note, I've always wondered what goes through Marin's mind when she's out partying with her friends... does she ever think about how that's perceived by the public? 😂

🤔 just another country falling into the hands of the older folks... think young blood like Sanna Marin would bring some fresh ideas, but it seems like old guard won out in this case. hope Orpo doesn't mess up the economy too badly 🤑 still weird how some ppl can be so divided over immigration, 48 seats for NCP and yet they want to reduce it? seems counterintuitive...

dude i'm telling you, Sanna Marin was just a pawn in the game 🤐. she was all about that NATO life and bringing Finland into the EU fold, but now she's being tossed out like yesterday's trash 💸. the NCP is just trying to cover their own tracks, you know? they're all about that "fixing Finland" rhetoric, but what about the real issues? like, have they even considered the impact of their anti-immigration stance on the economy? 🤔 i mean, it's not like Finland was thriving under Marin's leadership or anything. and what's with the government spending? just a distraction from the real agenda 🤑. and don't even get me started on Orpo's plans to reduce immigration... sounds like a ploy to keep the population down so they can exploit them for cheap labor 💼. mark my words, Finland is about to go through some major changes, and it won't be all sunshine and rainbows 🌈💥

man this is crazy 🤯, Marin was so young and already out of office, like what happened? Finland's economy is in a mess and Orpo is promising to fix it 💸, but I'm not holding my breath, we've heard that before from other right-wing politicians. still, credit to Marin for her foreign policy skills, joining NATO is a big deal and it's awesome that Helsinki is almost there 🙌, fingers crossed it happens soon!

😂 37 and already out of office? Guess that's what they mean by 'you're young, but not too young'! 😅 Orpo's promise to fix Finland's economy sounds like a recipe for success – or just another way of saying 'I'll make sure you have more jobs, but not too many'. 🤣 Anyway, it's not all doom and gloom; Helsinki finally joining NATO is a big deal! I mean, who needs energy crisis when you can join the cool kids' club? 💥

😐 seems like finland's politics got pretty messy 🤯 marin was only 37 but still gave it a shot 👍 ncp's victory might be good for finland in some ways tho, maybe they'll get things together 💼 but orpo's promise to "fix" the economy sounds kinda vague 💸 what's the plan, tho? 🤑 and marin's partying thing might've hurt her rep 😳

😩 oh man I'm like totally shocked that Sanna Marin lost she was so young and talented and had some amazing ideas for Finland's future 🤔 but I guess sometimes youth and idealism just aren't enough in politics 💔 and now it's up to Petteri Orpo to try and fix the country's economy which is a huge uphill battle 🏔️ I mean, immigration policies are so complicated and there's no easy way out of this mess 🤯 but at least Finland got to be a part of NATO which was really important for its security 😊 it just feels like one step forward and two steps back sometimes 🚶‍♀️

🤔 I'm not surprised by Sanna Marin's concession defeat 🏆 - it was only a matter of time before the opposition NCP caught up 💪. But seriously, 48 seats out of 200? That's a big swing for them 📈. Still, Petteri Orpo's "fix Finland" promise is pretty vague ⚠️... what exactly does he plan to do with that economy? It sounds like Marin was right to focus on other stuff too, like NATO membership 🤝 - that's something the country can really benefit from 💯. And let's not forget, she's still only 37! 🌱 I'm curious to see how she'll regroup and what kind of role she'll play in Finnish politics going forward 🔄.

Finland just got served 😒, Sanna Marin's reign as PM is over and she conceded defeat... like what even was that? 🤔 She was so young and had some good policies going on, but partying & government spending issues kinda killed her vibe 💔 Anyway, Petteri Orpo's all about "fixing" Finland and the economy now. Hope he doesn't mess it up too much 🤞 This NCP is all about immigration restrictions, so we'll see how that plays out. Not a fan of Sanna's reputation tho, she was always seen as kinda wild 🤪 Still, good on her for pushing for NATO membership, that's some big moves 💥
