‘Extreme’ hazing allegations force fraternity suspension, investigation at major US university

A top fraternity in Colorado has been suspended amid hazing allegations that have prompted an investigation by the university.

The University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) took action after receiving a credible report of hazing involving Phi Kappa Sigma, prompting a halt to all chapter activities. This decision came on the heels of two more anonymous reports detailing extreme or severe hazing incidents, which CU Boulder has formally logged with campus officials.

No further details have been made public regarding the allegations, but authorities are urging anyone with information about these events to come forward.

CU Boulder has stated that it takes all allegations seriously and will conduct a thorough investigation into the reported incidents. The university prohibits hazing under both state law and its own policies.

Boulder Police Department also weighed in on the situation, mentioning that since August they have received just three hazing reports involving CU Boulder fraternities, with two being deemed unfounded or closed.

The fraternity's national headquarters has announced that it will work with CU Boulder to investigate these allegations. The organization stated that it does not tolerate hazing and strives to eradicate this practice from the Greek system.

As part of its efforts to ensure student safety, CU Boulder released guidance on recognizing possible hazing, including coercion, degrading activities, or mandatory tasks presented as requirements for joining a group.

The investigation into Phi Kappa Sigma's alleged behavior is ongoing.

🤬 I'm so done with the Greek system in this country. Like, what's up with all these incidents of hazing? It's just not acceptable. And the fact that it took multiple reports for CU Boulder to take action says a lot about how serious they're taking it. Three reports in one semester is still too many, if you ask me 🤦‍♀️. What's next, are they gonna cover it up and hope it goes away? I'm all for transparency, especially when it comes to student safety issues. Can't we just have a zero-tolerance policy for hazing and move on from this toxic culture?

I'm so glad they're taking action against Phi Kappa Sigma 🙌. It's crazy that it took two more anonymous reports to get things moving, though. I mean, you'd think with all the stories going around about hazing, someone would've spoken up sooner. Anyway, it's good that CU Boulder is being proactive and working closely with the national headquarters to get to the bottom of this stuff 🤝. The fact that they're releasing guidance on recognizing possible hazing signs is a huge step forward – gotta keep those students safe! It's also kinda surprising that the police department only got three reports in the past 5 months, but I guess that's still better than nothing 😐. Fingers crossed this investigation turns up some real answers and puts an end to any nasty stuff going on within Phi Kappa Sigma 🔍

I gotta say, this is super concerning 🙅‍♂️. I mean, three reports in just a few months? That's like, what, an average of one report per month? It's crazy how hazing can spread so quickly, especially when no one wants to come forward 👀. I'm glad the university is taking this seriously and investigating, but like, it's about time 🕰️. The fact that only three reports were made in August is just a drop in the bucket compared to what could be happening behind closed doors. And with only two of those being deemed unfounded, I mean, who knows what's really going on? It's all so suspicious 😏.

I'm not surprised to hear about this suspension at CU Boulder... 🤔 It's been a long time coming, tbh. Hazing has always been a huge issue in Greek life, and it's about time the system takes concrete action. 🚫 The fact that there were just three hazing reports in August is concerning, and it's clear that more needs to be done to address this problem.

It's great to see CU Boulder releasing guidance on recognizing possible hazing - maybe now students will finally take it seriously? 📝 I also think the national headquarters' stance against hazing is a step in the right direction. Let's hope this suspension leads to some real change within Phi Kappa Sigma and other fraternities. 👀 Only time will tell if they'll actually follow through on their promises...

OMG u gotta be kiddin me!!! hazing incidents r so serious & unacceptable 🤯😡 i mean like two reports already & now phi kappa sigma gets suspended? that's not enough, they need to take down the whole org & make an example outta it 👊💥 what's goin on w/ all these incidents in one place?? CU Boulder needs 2 step up their game & make sure students r safe 🚨💪

OMG have you tried that new plant-based milk alternative they just launched in Whole Foods? I mean it's so good! I was like "wow" when I saw the strawberry flavor 😲. Anyway, back to this frat thing... it's crazy how hazing allegations can pop up out of nowhere. I've heard those types of rumors going around, but you never think it'll affect someone you know or even a whole fraternity 🤯. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for people being safe and having a good time, but sometimes these incidents are just so... disturbing 😳. Can we talk about food instead?

This is like super fishy 🤔👀, university takes action after just one credible report and suddenly they're all over it? I mean, what else was going on behind the scenes that we don't know about? It's not like this is the first time we've heard of hazing issues in CU Boulder fraternities... there are rumors that some brothers were making shady deals with suppliers to get their hands on some pretty potent stuff 🚽💸. And now, all of a sudden, they're talking about eradicating hazing from the Greek system? I'm not buying it 😒. What's really going on here?

🤕 this is so messed up! like, im all for brotherhood and whatnot but not at the expense of people's well-being 🙅‍♂️ hazing is literally super unacceptable and it's crazy that there are still some groups out there where it's tolerated 🤦‍♂️ i'm glad CU Boulder is taking this seriously tho, those student safety resources are super helpful 📚 hopefully the investigation can get to the bottom of things and bring some accountability to these frat brothers 👊

Ugh man, this is so messed up! Like, how can frat life turn into literal abuse? I get it, some people wanna party and have fun but at what cost?! CU Boulder needs to take these allegations super seriously and get to the bottom of this ASAP 🤬💔. Phi Kappa Sigma's national HQ better be all in on eradicating hazing too or else they're just as bad as the people who do it 😒. And honestly, three hazing reports in 5 months is still way too many - gotta keep students safe, you feel? 🙅‍♂️

I'm so sorry to hear that someone had to go through this awful experience... fraternity life can be toxic and it's not okay that people are being forced to do stuff that makes them feel bad about themselves 🤕. It's amazing that the university and police department are taking action, but I hope they find out who's behind these incidents soon so justice can be served 💪. Can you imagine having to join a group just because of some silly task or activity? Ugh, it gives me chills 😱. Anyway, I'm sending all my support and love to anyone who might have been affected by this situation 🌈💕.

My heart goes out to those affected by this... 🤕 I'm so sorry that you had to go through something like that. It's absolutely unacceptable that anyone would have to endure hazing, let alone feel pressured or coerced into doing things that make them uncomfortable. 🚫 The fact that it's happening in a fraternity setting, where people are supposed to be supporting each other, is just heartbreaking.

It's amazing that the university and local authorities are taking this so seriously and are working together to get to the bottom of it. The guidance they're releasing on recognizing possible hazing is a huge step forward in helping students identify when something might not be right. 💡 Let's all be supportive of each other and make sure everyone feels safe and respected.

I hope that Phi Kappa Sigma takes responsibility for their actions and makes some serious changes to prevent this kind of thing from happening again. We need more people like them who are willing to listen and learn, rather than just trying to sweep it under the rug 🙅‍♂️.

omg, this is soooo disturbing 🤕 u cant even imagine what those brothers must've gone thru lol its not just about the physical stuff, theres also mental & emotional toll it takes...im glad cu boulder is taking this seriously tho 👍 they need to get to the bottom of it ASAP. its crazy how some orgs still dont understand that hazing is a huge deal 🙄 guess thats why cu boulder has these guidelines out now to help students recognize when things might be fishy 👀 fingers crossed phi kappa sigma comes clean soon 💪

Man, this is so crazy that the fraternity got suspended like already! 🤯 But on the bright side, it shows that CU Boulder is taking hazing super seriously and wants to create a safe environment for all students. I'm glad they released some guidance on how to spot potential hazing stuff too - hopefully, it'll help people recognize if something's off. And yeah, three reports in August is like, really low compared to what we'd expect... still not great though. 🤔 Still, gotta give props to Phi Kappa Sigma for owning up to the allegations and saying they don't tolerate hazing - that takes a lot of courage. Fingers crossed this investigation turns up some real answers and helps create positive change in the Greek system! 💪

I'm not buying all this hype around fraternities being the "brotherhood" thing 🤔. I mean, if it's really about brotherhood, why do we need to suspend chapters over allegations of hazing? It just seems like a PR spin to make these groups look more innocent than they actually are. And what's with all the anonymous reports? Are people too scared to come forward because they're worried about being ostracized by their peers? 🤷‍♂️

And let's be real, if CU Boulder is taking all allegations seriously, why haven't we seen any actual consequences for previous hazing incidents? It just seems like the university is more interested in maintaining its reputation than actually holding these groups accountable. 💸

😕 I just can't believe this is still happening in our universities 🤦‍♂️. These young guys should know better than to bully each other into doing crazy stuff. It's not like they're kids anymore, they're supposed to be young adults learning life skills and growing as people 🤝. The fact that it's taken three anonymous reports for the university to take action just shows how messed up this system is 🙄. I'm all for holding them accountable and making sure these guys are held responsible for their actions, but at the same time, let's also talk about why they feel like they need to resort to this kind of behavior in the first place 🤔. We need to be teaching them empathy and respect from a younger age 👫.

😔 this kinda news just breaks my heart its like, how can people treat each other so bad? 🤕 and the fact that it happened in a fraternity where you're supposed to be supporting each other instead of tearing each other down is just devastating 😭

i know we all make mistakes but when stuff gets that serious it's time for us to step up and take responsibility 💪 like, im not saying everyone who's part of these frats are bad people but the fact that there have been multiple reports of hazing incidents is just a red flag 🚨 and i hope whoever is in trouble now gets the support they need ❤️

🤔 I mean, suspension doesn't seem like enough if people are saying the fraternity's been doing this stuff behind everyone's backs... three hazing reports in two months? 🚨 That's not exactly reassuring. How many of those reports were legit tho? I'd wanna see some sources on that. CU Boulder's got its policies against it, but is anyone actually enforcing them? I'm all for getting rid of hazing, but we gotta make sure the people responsible are held accountable...
