A bizarre case of theft has come to a close in New Zealand, where police successfully retrieved a $20,000 diamond-encrusted Faberge egg after a suspect allegedly swallowed it. The 32-year-old man, who was arrested before he could make his escape, had kept the thief on high alert for six days as he waited for nature to do its part.
According to charging documents viewed by the Guardian newspaper, the suspect was charged with stealing the FabergΓ© x 007 Special Edition Octopussy Egg Surprise Locket. The egg is a replica of one featured in the James Bond film "Octopussy" and is valued at around $20,000.
Police had assigned an officer to keep watch over the man while waiting for the trinket to pass through his system, a strategy that ultimately proved successful. The recovered pendant is now in police custody.
The egg, which measures 3.3 inches tall and features an 18k gold lattice framework adorned with blue sapphires and white diamonds, was inspired by the plot of the film "Octopussy." It opens to reveal an 18ct yellow gold octopus nestled inside, complete with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes.
This is not the first time a Faberge egg has made headlines. Earlier this week, a rare crystal and diamond FabergΓ© egg sold at auction in London for $30.2 million, shattering records.
