Sleep Awake review – Gary Numan cameos in an overly straightforward sleep-deprivation horror

"Sleep Awake: A Lackluster Nightmare"

The latest psychological horror game from the developers of [insert title], Sleep Awake, is a jarring yet underwhelming experience that fails to deliver on its promising premise. The game's strongest aspect is undoubtedly its setting – a desolate, post-apocalyptic world where the last city on Earth lies in ruins. The atmosphere is thick with an eerie sense of desperation and decay, reminiscent of Piranesi's subterranean etchings.

However, the game's narrative is disappointingly vague, failing to provide any clear answers about how humanity has become so inhospitable. Instead, players are left to navigate a world where sleep deprivation has become a constant fear, with the protagonist Katja struggling to stay awake amidst an increasingly paranoid society.

The gameplay itself is woefully dull and predictable, with rote patrol paths for enemies and simplistic puzzle-solving mechanics that make even the most basic challenges feel too easy. The "hide and seek" game of cat and mouse becomes more akin to a lazy stroll through a fairground ghost train than a heart-pounding survival experience.

Where Sleep Awake truly shines is in its visuals, with FMV sequences that are both unsettling and beautifully rendered. These surreal, arthouse-inspired moments often push the boundaries of what feels like "normal" gameplay, but ultimately fail to carry the game's narrative or mechanics forward.

The late-game cameo by Gary Numan as Hypnos, a gigantic floating head named after the god of sleep, is a bizarre inclusion that feels more like a publicity stunt than an organic part of the story. The usually synth-rock pioneer's performance here feels forced and unconvincing, like a desperate attempt to inject some semblance of drama into the game.

Ultimately, Sleep Awake feels like a missed opportunity – a game that fails to interrogate its own themes or mechanics in any meaningful way. With too much repetition, lackluster gameplay, and a narrative that falters under scrutiny, this horror game is more likely to put players to sleep than truly frighten them awake.

I gotta say, I'm super disappointed with Sleep Awake. I mean, the setting is SO cool, it's like they took inspiration from my favorite dystopian novels 🤯🌪️. But, the gameplay just feels so... meh. I was expecting something way more intense and frightening, but instead it's just like walking through a sleepy town on a Sunday afternoon 😴. The visuals are nice, don't get me wrong, but they're not enough to save the game from its overall lackluster experience. And, bruh, Gary Numan's cameo? What were they thinking? It felt so out of place and forced 🙄. I guess you could say Sleep Awake is like a beautiful sunset – it looks great from afar, but up close, it's just a bunch of colors that don't really add up to much 🌅.

omg u guys the graphics r actually super immersive but like what happened 2 the story & gameplay? it's like they took every creepy element from other horror games & mashed 'em together w/o really addin anythin new 🤯💀 i mean cat & mouse game mechanics are so overdone already, can't they think outside the box 4 once? 😒

I'm so meh about this one 🤷‍♂️. I mean, the setting does sound pretty cool - a desolate post-apocalyptic world... but it's not like they did anything innovative with it. And don't even get me started on the gameplay 😴. It just feels so... lazy. I was expecting more excitement, more challenge. But nope, just your run-of-the-mill patrolling and solving puzzles that's way too easy.

And what's up with the narrative? 🤔 I'm supposed to be scared about sleep deprivation and paranoia, but it all just feels kinda vague and lacking in depth. And don't even get me started on Gary Numan's cameo... like, I get it, you're trying to be artsy, but come on! 😂

I think my biggest issue is that the game feels like a missed opportunity. They had some cool ideas, but they just didn't execute them properly. Maybe with a bit more polish and attention to detail, this could've been something special... but as it stands, I'm just not impressed 🤷‍♂️.

ugh i dont know man 🤕 the setting of the game sounds so immersive and all but like what even is the point of katja's whole struggle with sleep deprivation? feels like they just introduced that plot thread and forgot to develop it lol. and the gameplay just sounds so bland... 🙄 i love gary numan but even he can't save this game from itself. the visuals are cool, im willing to give them that 👀 but overall its just a disappointing experience

Sleep Awake just didn't do it for me 🤕. I mean, the atmosphere and visuals are on point 😱, but the whole experience feels so predictable and boring 😴. The pacing of the gameplay is all over the place too ⏱️ - one minute you're running from monsters, the next you're solving puzzles that are just too easy 💡. And don't even get me started on Gary Numan's cameo... what was up with that? 🤔 It felt like they just threw in a random plot twist to make it more interesting. Overall, I'd say Sleep Awake is a solid but unremarkable horror game 😐.

ugh i was so hyped for Sleep Awake but now im super disappointed 🤕 the setting is literally insane i love how desolate and post-apocalyptic it is but like the gameplay just felt soooo dull 😴 i mean what even is the point of all those patrol paths? can't they come up with something more interesting than that?! 🤔 at least the visuals were pretty cool i loved the FMV sequences, especially with Gary Numan as Hypnos lol what was he even doing there though? 🙄 it just felt so forced and random. overall im really disappointed in Sleep Awake, i was expecting so much more 😐

I don’t usually comment but I gotta say Sleep Awake feels like it's sleeping on its potential 🤯👀. The atmosphere and visuals are straight fire 🔥, but the gameplay is so dull and predictable it puts me to sleep (no pun intended 😴). And don't even get me started on that Gary Numan cameo... what was the thought process behind that? I mean, I'm all for a good surprise, but it felt like a publicity stunt 🤑. It's like they took all the creepy vibes and just...phoned it in 📞. If they'd put more effort into developing the story and gameplay, this could've been a real wake-up call (sorry again 😅). As it stands, I'll be sticking to my usual horrors 🎃.
