A high-ranking Somali illegal immigrant, Abdul Dahir Ibrahim, has been arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in an operation targeting those considered "worst of the worst" criminals.
The 1995 migrant entered the United States after being deported from Canada. An immigration judge ordered his removal in 2004, citing significant fraud on his record, but he was denied all appeals. Ibrahim had also been convicted in Dakota County District Court for providing false information to police and driving without a valid license.
Despite this, Ibrahim has managed to gain temporary protected status (TPS) for nearly 10 years, which granted him certain rights as a refugee. His application for TPS was pending when the ICE operation targeted his status.
The migrant's ties to Minnesota politicians are also noteworthy. Ibrahim had been photographed with several prominent figures including Governor Tim Walz, who ran against former President Donald Trump in 2024.
The Somali community has made significant contributions to Minnesota and economic culture of this state according to Gov. Walz
