Goodbye June review – Kate Winslet's Christmas heartwarmer is like a two-hour John Lewis ad

Kate Winslet's feature directing debut "Goodbye June" is an unapologetically sentimental Christmas movie that will likely resonate with families looking for a heartwarming holiday film. The story revolves around Helen Mirren's character, June, a sharp-tongued matriarch diagnosed with terminal cancer, who uses her last days to bring her family together and heal old wounds.

The ensemble cast delivers impressive performances across the board, but Winslet stands out for her restrained and controlled portrayal of June, which feels somewhat muted compared to her co-stars. A notable standout is Andrea Riseborough's character, a stressed careerist matriarch who gets into a confrontation with her sister-in-law over their ailing mother.

While "Goodbye June" has its moments, it often feels overly reliant on sentimentality and saccharine sweetness, bordering on the cartoonish. The script by Joe Anders feels contrived at times, with a narrative that relies heavily on convenient plot devices to elicit emotional responses from the audience.

Winslet's direction is largely admirable, but her approach seems more akin to a two-hour John Lewis Christmas ad than an actual feature film. The movie's pacing is plodding, and the tone feels inconsistent, veering wildly between drama and comedy without ever quite finding its footing.

One of the most egregious offenders is the character of Bernie, played by Timothy Spall, whose goofy antics feel like a relic from a different film altogether. Despite this, Winslet still manages to bring a sense of depth and nuance to his character, highlighting the complexities behind his scatterbrained behavior.

Ultimately, "Goodbye June" feels more like a shallow attempt at capturing the warmth and magic of the holiday season rather than a genuinely heartfelt exploration of family dynamics and mortality. While fans of sentimental Christmas movies may find some solace in its overly sentimental approach, others will likely find themselves checking their watches as the film drags on to its overly convenient conclusion.

I just watched this new Christmas movie "Goodbye June" and it's got me thinking 🎄... Sometimes we need a little bit of sentimentality to warm our hearts during the holiday season, but when it overdoes it, it can feel like a sugar rush that wears off too fast 💔. As for Kate Winslet's direction, I think she's trying her best, but sometimes you gotta know when to hold back and let the story breathe, ya know? 🤗 It's easy to get caught up in trying to make everything perfect, but perfection can be a pretty low bar, especially during the holidays when we're all just looking for a little bit of joy and connection. Anyway, I'd say "Goodbye June" is more like a sweet treat than a full-on feast 🍰... Still worth watching if you're in the mood for something cozy, but don't expect it to be a timeless classic.

omg u guys... just watched "Goodbye June" n i'm still trying 2 process how much it felt like a sappy christmas ad 🎄😴 kate winslet's direction is actually pretty admirable, but her approach feels super watered down compared 2 other movies. the ensemble cast is talented tho 🤩 andrea riseborough's character was my fave, but overall i feel like they relied too much on sentimentality & convenient plot devices to elicit emotions from us. Bernie's character 😂 was literally cringeworthy at times... it's a shame, cuz the movie had some really nice moments of depth n nuance. still, i think it's more shallow than genuine, u know? 🤷‍♀️ just be prepared 4 a slow-paced, tonally inconsistent ride that'll probably make u wanna check ur watch by the end 🕰️😴

OMG u guys i just watched "Goodbye June" & honestly i was meh about it 🤔 the story sounds so nice n all but the execution feels kinda off...like wat happened 2 the script? 😴 it's like they took every cliche from a John Lewis ad n mashed them all together into one big ol' mess...n don't even get me started on Bernie's character lol he's just so...extra 🤣

anywayz i feel bad for Kate Winslet 'cause she really tries her best as the director but sometimes it feels like she's just phoning it in instead of bringing some real depth to the story. 🙄 n the acting is pretty good tho esp Andrea Riseborough, she's on fire 🔥👏

overall i'd say "Goodbye June" is a cute movie 4 families who love sappy Christmas movies but if u r lookin for somethin with a little more substance...meh 🤷‍♀️

I gotta say, I was really looking forward to this one 🎄 but it kinda fell flat for me. Kate Winslet's direction shows promise, but it feels like she's playing it too safe here. The whole movie has a weird tone that's hard to pin down - sometimes it's super emotional and sentimental, other times it's trying to be funny or light-hearted. It's like they're trying to hit all the right notes for a Christmas film, but end up hitting none of them 🎵

And don't even get me started on Bernie 😂... I mean, Timothy Spall is usually great in these roles, but this guy just feels like a prop to be used for laughs. It's like they took a character from a different movie and just grafted it onto this one.

I think what really bothered me was how heavy-handed the script was. It relies too much on convenient plot devices and manufactured drama to get your emotions going, rather than trusting its characters to carry the story 🤣

Still, I can see why some people would love it - if you're into that whole sentimental Christmas movie vibe, this might be right up your alley ❤️. But for me, it's a bit of a miss 🎅

Ugh, i just watched this movie 🤦‍♀️... honestly, it felt like they took every sappy Christmas trope and mashed them all together into one big ol' mess 🎅😒. Kate Winslet's direction is all over the place - sometimes she nails these emotional moments, but other times it feels like she's just trying to fit in some cheesy sentimentality 💔. And don't even get me started on that annoying character Bernie 😂... i mean, what was he even supposed to do there? It's like they took every comedy relief cliche and turned it into a caricature 🤪. Overall, this movie just felt like a lazy attempt at capturing the magic of Christmas 💫... sadly, it didn't quite deliver for me 🎁😔

OMG u guys i just watched this new christmas movie "Goodbye June" directed by kate winslet 🎄 and honestly it felt like a total tearjerker but not in a good way 😩 i mean i love sentimental movies but this one was kinda too much for me, its like they took every sappy christmas cliche and mashed them all together into one messy film 🤯 the acting is decent tho esp Andrea Riseborough's character she's sooo intense 🔥 but overall i think winslet could've done more with her directorial debut tbh it felt like she was trying too hard to be sentimental and sweet 🍰

tbh idk why ppl love this movie so much 🤷‍♀️ it feels like a super sappy and cheesy christmas film that's just tryin to make u cry 💔 but honestly i didnt feel anythin when i watched it maybe cuz it wasnt very original or had a weak plot 💭 and yeah kate winslets directing skills r pretty meh 🤦‍♀️ she tried her best but sometimes u can tell when someone is tryna be all dramatic and sentimental but not really pullin it off 😒

omg, i just watched "Goodbye June" 🎄👻 and i gotta say, it's a bit of a mixed bag for me 🤔. kate winslet's direction is super admirable, but at times feels like she's trying too hard to be all sentimental and sappy 😩. the pacing is so slow, i found myself checking my watch multiple times 🕰️! and don't even get me started on timothy spall's character... his antics feel like they belong in a different film altogether 🤣. that being said, the ensemble cast is talented and delivers impressive performances across the board 👏. still, it feels like a shallow attempt at capturing the magic of christmas rather than a genuine exploration of family dynamics and mortality ❤️. overall, i'd give it 3/5 stars ⭐⭐⭐️. might be worth watching if you're a die-hard sentimental christmas movie fan 🎅

I just watched this movie and I gotta say it's been days since it came out 🤷‍♀️ but I think it's a bit of a bummer. I mean, Kate Winslet is an amazing actress and all but for me she kinda phoned it in with her character June 🎬. It felt like she was just going through the motions instead of really bringing that sharp-tongued matriarch to life.

And don't even get me started on Bernie 😂 Timothy Spall's character is literally so extra and it feels like they just threw him in there as a joke. But despite all that, I did feel bad for the family 🤗 and I think Winslet did do a good job of capturing their love for each other.

It's just that for me, this movie felt like one of those sappy holiday rom-coms where everything is all sunshine and rainbows ☀️. It didn't really tackle any heavy stuff or have any real depth to it. Maybe I'm just jaded from watching too many movies 🤦‍♀️?

omg i just watched "Goodbye June" thinking it was gonna be like the usual feel good christmas movie but nope its so...meh 🤷‍♀️ i mean kate winslet tries her best but even she can't elevate this messy script to a higher plane. andrea riseborough is the real MVP though, that stress careerist matriarch is EVERYTHING 💁‍♀️ and timothy spall's character is just...i don't know what that's supposed to be 🤔 it feels like they threw in a random quirky guy to try and make us laugh. overall its a shallow attempt at capturing the holiday spirit, but hey if you're into that sorta thing, go for it 💕

I just watched that Kate Winslet movie "Goodbye June" 🎥🎄 and I gotta say, it's kinda meh 😐. I mean, Helen Mirren looks like she's having a blast as June, but the rest of the cast seems kinda phoned in 🤔. And don't even get me started on the script – it's all over the place 📝. I felt like I was stuck in some kind of never-ending Christmas cookie-baking montage 🍪🕰️. Can someone explain to me why they made Bernie's character so... odd? Like, what's up with that guy? 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, I guess if you're into sappy holiday movies, this might be for you 🎅. But personally, I'd rather watch paint dry 😴

omg I watched this movie last christmas 🎄👀 and I gotta say it felt like a super long john lewis ad 😴💔 the acting was alright but for me it was all about the feels and honestly kinda too much for my taste 🤷‍♀️ kate winslet did her thing tho and andrea riseborough gave some solid scenes 💪 the only character that really stood out to me was bernie lol timothy spall's goofy vibes were so funny but still felt like they didn't belong in the rest of the movie 🎁 overall it was a nice try but didnt leave an impression on me sadly 💔
