US lawmakers are joining forces with a journalist who was injured in an Israeli double-tap strike that killed a Reuters reporter, calling for accountability and justice in the case. Dylan Collins, an American journalist and former Al Jazeera correspondent, wants to know "who pulled the trigger" in the attack that also injured six other journalists.
Collins is not alone in his quest for answers. US lawmakers Senator Peter Welch and Congresswoman Becca Balint are joining him, pushing for accountability in the strike which wounded six journalists. The lawmakers claim they will continue to push for justice despite Israel's claims of an investigation into the attack.
Welch says that Israel has provided no evidence that it questioned soldiers or contacted key witnesses like Collins and other survivors of the strike. He accuses Israel of obfuscation, claiming that the administration of then-President Joe Biden did next to nothing to hold Israel accountable. Welch also claims that the Biden administration claimed to champion freedom of the press but failed to take action.
The attack on journalists in Lebanon is not an isolated incident according to Collins. The AFP journalist says that he and his colleagues were livestreaming their reporting, which should have protected them, but they were still hit twice by tank fire, 37 seconds apart.
Collins believes that the October 13th strike was a war crime carried out in broad daylight and broadcast on live television. He urges lawmakers to hold Israel accountable for its actions.
The US government's lack of action on this issue is "deafening silence" according to Collins. Neither the Biden nor the Trump administration has ever publicly acknowledged that a US citizen, Dylan Collins was wounded in this attack.
