‘Scary, cold, hungry and lonely’: Volunteer soldier shares experience on front line | CNN

A 20-year-old Ukrainian volunteer soldier, Akula, recounted the harrowing realities of life on the front line during the ongoing Russian invasion in a candid interview with CNN.

"Scary, cold, hungry, and lonely" - these are just a few words that summed up his experience as he navigated the treacherous terrain. For Akula, joining the war effort at the onset of the conflict was a defining moment that would forever alter his life.

As the weeks turned into months, the 20-year-old soldier found himself exposed to unimaginable horrors. The constant bombardment of artillery fire, the eerie silence that followed each attack, and the haunting memories of fallen comrades left an indelible mark on his psyche.

Akula's words echoed a common refrain among those who have faced combat: "It's like you're trapped in a nightmare from which you can't wake up." The exhaustion, both physical and emotional, was overwhelming. Sleep deprivation became a luxury few could afford, and the weight of responsibility on their shoulders was crushing at times.

The mental toll of war is a heavy one to bear. Akula shared that the most daunting challenge has been coping with the trauma inflicted by his experiences. "It's not just about the physical wounds; it's about the emotional scars that never fully heal."

His journey serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict, where young lives are upended forever by circumstances beyond their control.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around how these young volunteers like Akula just get thrust into this crazy situation... 🤯 Like, I know war is brutal, but it's not something you can just sign up for, no? And to think they're only 20! 🚫 It's wild that they're expected to handle all the emotional trauma and whatnot without any real support system. 💔

And honestly, it sounds like sleep deprivation might be even worse than the constant gunfire... 😴 I mean, who needs sleep when you've got a war to fight? But seriously, how are these kids supposed to cope with that level of stress and guilt? 🤯 It's no wonder they're struggling with emotional scars that never fully heal. We need to start thinking about ways to support them long after the fighting stops... 💔

can u believe these kids gotta go thru this?? 🤯 i mean, i know we're living in 2025 and all but still... it's just so sad to hear about ppl like akula who r doin their part & gettin crushed by the mental toll of war. like, sleep is a luxury? ain't that crazy? 😴 u gotta wonder how they bounce back from this stuff 🤷‍♂️

I'm really worried about these guys who are fighting on the front line 🤕. It sounds like Akula's experience is super relatable to what I've read online from other soldiers. The psychological stuff can't be easy to deal with - it's like they're stuck in this perpetual state of hypervigilance and you can only imagine how that would affect your mental health 😔.

I think we need to make sure these young people get the support they need when they come back 🤝. It's not just about providing a safe haven, but also making sure they have access to good therapy and resources to deal with their PTSD. We should be thinking about how we can help them reintegrate into society without leaving any emotional scars behind 💕

man this kid Akula is like literally going through so much and still trying to process everything he's seen and experienced 🤯 his mental health is literally on the line here and it's so sad that people don't realize how tough it is for them to deal with all this trauma and stress 😔 at least he's speaking out about it now and sharing his story which might help others who are going through similar things 👊

OMG this guy is so brave to share his story 🤯💥 Akula sounds like he's been through so much already and it's still not over 😩 I can imagine how scary it must be to be in the front line with all that artillery fire and no silence... ever 💥😵 And poor dude, sleep deprivation is just awful, hope he gets some rest soon 😴💤
