Oklahoma trooper helps deliver newborn on highway shoulder: 'The baby is coming!'

Trooper Shelby's Unforgettable Delivery: When Duty Called

On Nov. 22, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Shelby was patrolling southwest Oklahoma when his routine day took an unexpected turn. A woman in active labor called for help via ambulance, and Shelby immediately responded to assist with traffic control.

As he arrived on the scene, Shelby noticed a black Chevrolet Camaro parked on the shoulder of the highway, its passenger door wide open and the expectant mother sitting in the front seat. The situation was about to take an extraordinary turn.

Shelby's calm demeanor quickly turned into action as he reassured the woman that help was just moments away. But little did he know, the baby had other plans. In a matter of seconds, Shelby found himself playing catch with a newborn baby boy – literally delivering him.

"It was all I did," Shelby said in an interview. "I've received medical training on how to assist during childbirth, but never expected it would be called upon in such a life-altering moment."

The birth of the baby boy, Finley, occurred while Shelby was still talking to the mother. Dashcam footage shows Shelby's swift actions, as the ambulance arrived shortly after and took both the mother and Finley to the hospital for continued care.

"I went right back to work," Shelby said matter-of-factly about his next duty call. "We're happy to report that both mother and baby are doing great!"

Shelby's experience highlights the unexpected nature of a trooper's job, which often requires them to be prepared for anything – including an impromptu delivery. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol emphasizes its medical training includes basic childbirth skills, reassuring that in such situations, their trained personnel will help.

In related news, another family experienced a surprise birth at McDonald's parking lot earlier this year. While the coincidence is striking, Shelby's professionalism and calm demeanor are more than just remarkable – they're lifesaving.

You can't start a fire without a spark 🤯! This trooper's quick thinking and composure saved that baby's life, it's just mind-blowing! 💥

Shelby's all calm and collected while also becoming a impromptu midwife 🤱♂️ and the kid's born while he's still talking to the mom 😲 talk about a duty call! 🚨 anyway, it's just crazy that troopers have basic childbirth skills in their training so they can help in situations like this 👍

omg what an amazing story 🤯! i mean, who needs a birth plan when duty calls right? lol I'm literally shaking my head in awe thinking about Trooper Shelby's quick reflexes & calmness under pressure. it's crazy how he was able to think on his feet & deliver the baby (literally) while talking to the mom 🤰♀️. and can you even imagine if that ambulance hadn't arrived when it did? 🚑😱 anyway, this just goes to show that emergency responders have skills way beyond what we usually see in the news 💪. I'm so glad both mom & baby Finley are doing great! 🙏

🤯 can u believe this dude Shelby was literally playing catch with a newborn baby while his mama needed help on the side of the road? I mean, I've seen some wild stuff online but this takes the cake 🍰. Like, what are the chances that he'd be the one to deliver the baby on his route? 🤷‍♂️ It's not like he was expecting it either - he had medical training for emergencies but never thought it'd happen in real life. And now they're saying the mom and baby are doing great?! 🙏 all hail Trooper Shelby for saving a life, dude! 👍

Wow 😮, I'm still trying to wrap my head around this crazy story. A trooper responding to an emergency call ends up having to deliver a baby! 🤯 And not just any delivery, but literally catching the baby after it's born. That's insane. I can only imagine how intense and overwhelming that must have been for Shelby. I mean, you're trained to respond in emergencies, but this is on a whole other level. 😲

I cant believe how lucky that trooper was 😲. I mean, you gotta be prepared for anything on the job, but delivering a baby? That's just crazy talk 💥. I'm so glad everything turned out okay for the mom and the little guy, Finley 🤱♂️. It's not every day you hear about someone being born on the side of the road 🚗👶. My wife always says that you never know what's gonna happen in life, and this is just one of those wild stories 😂.

I mean, who expects to be playing catch with a newborn while keeping a mom safe? 😂🚨 his training clearly kicked in and he saved that baby's life 💖... can you imagine being in that situation? it's crazy how sometimes life just throws you curveballs 🌪️ but Shelby handled it like a pro 💪... I'm definitely giving him a gold star for being an awesome trooper 👏

omg i cant even right now!!!! 🤯 I mean, can you even imagine having to deliver a baby on the side of the road?! like, thats not part of the job description lolol! but seriously, trooper Shelby is literally a hero and i love how he just stayed calm and did his thing. i feel for the mom though, that must've been super scary. and finley got a pretty cool start in life, haha! 🤰♂️ anyhoo, its crazy to think about these unexpected situations happening all the time with troopers, but at least they're trained for it. anyway, i gotta ask, does shelby get a bonus or something for being a lifesaver? 🤑

omg can u even imagine being that close to 2 lives in an split sec?? 🤯💨 trooper shelby's reaction is literally priceless 😂 and i'm so glad he was able to stay calm & composed under pressure. his medical training clearly paid off in the most unexpected way 🙌 that baby finley is one lucky dude 👶 to have such a hero dad 👴

I'm tellin' ya, that trooper was just doin' his job... or so it seems 😏. I mean, what are the chances of him showin' up at a birth on the side of the highway? It's like he was meant to be there 🤯. And let's not forget all the training they receive in medical emergencies - maybe that baby needed some extra special care 💉. But seriously, it's crazy how quickly Shelby sprang into action and saved the day... or night, I guess 😉. The dashcam footage is wild, too - you can tell he was just doin' what any normal person would do in that situation 🤷‍♂️. Still, gotta wonder if this whole thing was just a coincidence or if there's somethin' more goin' on here 🤔...

🤯 Shelby's delivery skills are literally on a whole different level! I mean, who expects to be playing catch with a newborn when you're supposed to be directing traffic? The fact that he stayed calm and followed protocol is a huge credit to his training. And can we talk about how awesome it is that the ambulance arrived quickly to get everyone the help they needed? 🚑💨 I'm just glad to hear that both mom and baby are doing great, and that Shelby was able to keep his cool in such an unexpected situation. It's a huge reminder of why having medical training on our first responders is so important - you never know when it might be called upon! 😌

OMG 🤯 like I cant even right now!! Trooper Shelby is literally a superhero!!! I mean I've heard of good Samaritans but to have him play catch with a newborn baby boy on the side of the highway? 😱👶 Like what are the chances?! And he's all calm and collected too, that's just incredible. I love how he's making light of it like it was no big deal when really it's life or death stuff. The fact that he went back to work after that is just amazing. I'm so glad both mom and baby are doing great 🤞💕

Ugh, I'm still fiddling with my dashboard to get a stable connection on here... anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Trooper Shelby's crazy delivery story 🤯😂. I mean, who expects to be playing catch with a newborn when you're supposed to be directing traffic? It's like the universe is testing their patience and skills at the same time.

I guess it's good that the highway patrol has medical training, but can't they just have a " childbirth station" on standby or something? 🤷‍♂️ At least Shelby seemed calm about it, which is impressive. I'd be freaking out if I had to deliver a baby on the side of the road 😅.

And can we talk about how convenient that ambulance showed up right when Shelby was done with his "lifesaving" delivery? 🚑♂️ It's like the universe was just waiting for him to finish his heroics so they could swoop in and take over.

I MEAN COME ON, THIS IS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A MOVIE! 🤯 TROOPER TYLER SHELBY DELIVERING A BABY IN THE MIDDLE OF A HIGHWAY? IT'S UNBELIEVABLE! I'M SHAKEN BY HIS CALMNESS AND PROFESSIONALISM, ESPECIALLY WHEN HE'S DEALING WITH SOMETHING AS LIFE-CHANGING AS A NEWBORN CHILD. AND TO THINK HE JUST WENT ABOUT HIS DUTY CALL AFTER IT ALL? THAT TELLS YOU EIGHT BALLS IS HOW HE HANDLES STRESS 🤪

And I love how he's all like "it was nothing" about it, like he's not even a big deal or anything 🙃. I think this story is so awesome because it shows how troopers are trained for all sorts of unexpected situations, and how they can turn what could be super stressful into a smooth delivery (pun intended)! 💯
