Professor visiting Harvard arrested by ICE agrees to leave country

A Harvard professor with ties to Brazil faces deportation after being charged with firing a pellet gun near a Massachusetts synagogue on the eve of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur. Carlos Portugal Gouvea, an associate professor at the University of São Paulo law school who had taught at Harvard in Cambridge, Massachusetts during the fall semester, was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after his temporary nonimmigrant visa was revoked.

Gouvea's arrest has been linked to a disagreement between the Trump administration and Harvard over allegations of inadequate efforts to combat antisemitism on campus. The administration had accused Harvard of failing to protect Jewish students and reach a settlement, prompting the university to sue for termination of research grants.

However, local authorities have described the incident as an accident, stating that Gouvea was unaware he was next to a synagogue and firing his pellet gun near it. Police in Brookline, Massachusetts arrested Gouvea on October 1 after responding to reports of a person with a gun near the Temple Beth Zion.

Gouvea had previously reached a deal to resolve charges related to the incident, which included six months of pre-trial probation and $386.59 in restitution. Other charges were dismissed as part of the agreement.

ICE arrested Gouvea after revoking his visa, citing an "anti-Semitic shooting incident" – a description at odds with how local authorities have described the case. Despite this, Gouvea has agreed to leave the country, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

As tensions between the Trump administration and Harvard continue, Gouvea's situation highlights the complexities of international relations and visa policies in the US. The professor's deportation has sparked concerns among academics and advocates for human rights.

this is super crazy 🤯, i dont know what to make of it. i mean, carlos gouvea seems like a nice guy, and accidentally firing a pellet gun near a synagogue is definitely not antisemitic, you know? but at the same time, the trump admin is all about being tough on immigrants, and now he's got gouvea in this situation where he could potentially be deported. its like, what even is the point of having a visa if youre just gonna revoke it for something that might not have been even intentional? 🤔

🤕 This is a super complicated situation... I mean, on one hand, someone was fired from their job because they were accused of not doing enough to protect Jewish students, and now this guy is being deported? 🚫 It's like, what even happened here? And why did the government choose to revoke his visa just because he got in a little trouble with some pellets 🎯. I get that someone might have gotten hurt, but it seems like there are so many variables at play here... like, was this guy really antisemitic or was he just having a bad day? 😕 And what about all the Harvard folks who are speaking out against his deportation? Do they think he should stay or go? 🤔 I'm torn too, tbh. It's like, you gotta weigh the consequences of one thing against another... but at the end of the day, it's just sad that this guy is going through all this drama 🌪️.

I'm shocked he got a pellet gun and shot near a synagogue 🤦‍♂️... I mean, who doesn't know you're about to fire a gun next to a place where people sit on velvet seats and cry all day? Just kidding, it's not funny when people get hurt. But seriously, what's up with the visa revocation? Did they think he was just messing around with his pellet gun like a teenager playing with their Nerf blaster 🎯? And now he's got to leave the country because of a misunderstanding... that's just a big ol' bummer 😔

I think it's a total joke that this dude is being deported 🤣 ICE should be all over him for doing what any normal person would do in a situation like that, firing a pellet gun as a reaction to someone freaking out near the synagogue... like who hasn't lost their cool at some point? He was already getting slapped with probation and restitution, what's one more thing? And yeah, Harvard should just suck it up and deal with the fallout if they're not gonna do anything about campus safety. This whole thing is a total overreaction 🙄

I'm not sure what's more concerning, the fact that a pellet gun was fired near a synagogue or that this is being used as an excuse to deport someone from Brazil 🤔💡. I mean, come on, it was an accident! It's just bad luck that Gouvea was next to the synagogue. And now he's being made to pay for it with his freedom and livelihood 💸🚫. What's the real issue here? The fact that Harvard didn't do more to prevent this incident or the Trump admin is trying to exploit it for their own gain? 🤷‍♂️😒

I'm kinda disappointed in this whole thing... I get that someone was fired near a synagogue, but revoking his visa is extreme 🤔. ICE is being super strict about this one, it's like they're trying to make an example out of him. Meanwhile, the Trump admin and Harvard are still at odds, and we're stuck in the middle with all these complicated laws 🚫. I'm worried about Carlos Gouvea, he's going through a tough time right now 😔. On one hand, I get why the US has to protect its citizens, but on the other hand, isn't that professor just trying to live his life and teach at Harvard? 🤷‍♂️
