The Abandons review – Gillian Anderson's po-faced western has some very dodgy script moments

Gillian Anderson's Western Venture: A Tale of Manifest Destiny and Moral Order

The dusty streets of Angel's Ridge, Washington Territory, 1854, are abuzz with tension as Constance Van Ness, a formidable silver mine owner, sets her sights on Jasper Hollow. Played by Gillian Anderson in full ice mode, the character is clearly trouble, and trouble indeed it brings to the otherwise peaceful town. But not just any trouble - a matriarchal Western with a hint of feminist subversion.

As Constance's iron grip tightens around the local economy, the residents of Jasper Hollow find themselves at odds with her, led by Fiona Nolan, played by Lena Headey. With a ragtag group of motley orphan crew outcasts at her side, Fiona is determined to protect her family and community from the clutches of the powerful Constance.

But this Western is not just about good vs. evil - it's a nuanced exploration of faith, morality, and the complexities of human relationships. The script, penned by Kurt Sutter, takes its time to develop the characters, particularly Fiona, who is forced to navigate the treacherous waters of power, loyalty, and family.

The chemistry between Anderson and Headey is undeniable, as their characters engage in a battle for control of Jasper Hollow. But it's not just about personal vendettas - it's about the fate of an entire community. The script improves in quality as the series progresses, with fewer instances of melodrama and more subtle character development.

One standout aspect of "The Abandons" is its willingness to tackle complex issues head-on. It's a Western that doesn't shy away from violence or moral ambiguity - it's a true reflection of the darker aspects of human nature. And yet, despite its heavy themes, the series never feels too serious, thanks to its expertly crafted dialogue and well-developed characters.

In short, "The Abandons" is a thought-provoking Western that challenges our assumptions about power, family, and morality. It's not without its flaws, but with its engaging performances, nuanced character development, and timely themes, it's a must-watch for fans of the genre.

I'm so intrigued by this new Western series "The Abandons"! 🤠 I love how Gillian Anderson brings a unique intensity to Constance Van Ness, and Lena Headey shines as the feisty Fiona Nolan. But what really caught my attention is how the show tackles some heavy themes like power struggles, family dynamics, and moral gray areas. It's refreshing to see a Western that doesn't shy away from complex issues - it feels more authentic and realistic. The chemistry between Anderson and Headey is undeniable, and I appreciate how the script improves as the series progresses. 📺

Ugh, just what I needed to watch on my streaming platform... another Western 🤠. Like we haven't seen enough of these already. But hey, Gillian Anderson looks fierce in full ice mode 😎, and Lena Headey's character does have some great moments. The show's attempt at exploring complex issues like power dynamics and morality is kinda interesting, I guess. Not too heavy-handed or preachy... I mean, it's not like the writers are trying to make a point or anything 🙄. But, yeah, it's definitely a must-watch for fans of Westerns and character-driven drama... if you're into that sorta thing 😐.

I just binged this Western series "The Abandons" on Netflix 😂🤠 and I gotta say, Gillian Anderson is SOOOO intense as Constance Van Ness 💁‍♀️! But what really caught my attention was how they tackled complex issues like power struggles, family dynamics, and morality in a way that's both thought-provoking and entertaining 🤔. The chemistry between the leads, especially Fiona and Constance, is undeniable 🔥. What I love most about this show is its willingness to confront the darker aspects of human nature without shying away from violence or moral ambiguity 💪. Not perfect, but definitely a must-watch for fans of Westerns 👍!

I'm loving this new western series "The Abandons" 🤠👏, but you know what got me thinking? It reminded me of the whole Native American relocation debate in the US. I mean, Constance Van Ness is basically a pioneer settler trying to claim land and exploit resources, while Fiona Nolan and her crew are like the native Americans fighting against that very same colonization. The script's portrayal of the complex relationships between settlers and locals feels eerily familiar 🤔. And let's not forget about the themes of power, loyalty, and family - it's a whole mess, just like the real-life politics of westward expansion 😬. I'm not saying the show is perfect, but its willingness to tackle those tough issues makes it way more interesting than your average western 🎥.

omg u gotta check out this new western series "The Abandons" starring gillian and lena 🤠🔥 they're literally killing the game! i love how it's not your typical cowboy vs outlaw story - it's so much deeper than that 🤯 it's like, what really happens when you have power and control? and how do u navigate all those emotions? 💖 the writing is on point too, no melodrama just real people with real problems 🙌 and gillian and lena are perfection as always 👯‍♀️

I just binged this new western series "The Abandons" and I'm still reeling from the experience 😲. As someone who loves complex characters and moral ambiguity, I was hooked from the start. Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey absolutely kill it as Constance and Fiona - their chemistry is undeniable and their characters are so multi-dimensional 🤯. The script takes its time to develop the story, but trust me, it's worth it. What really stood out to me though, was how the show tackled some heavy themes like power, family dynamics and violence without shying away from them 💥. It's a wild ride with no easy answers, but that's what makes it so compelling 🤔. I'm already thinking of watching the rest of the series for more 👍

OMG, you know how much I loved watching Westerns back in the day? Like, "Bonanza" was my fave show ever! 😍 And now this new series is like a breath of fresh air, ya know? It's all about these complex characters and their moral struggles... reminds me of that one episode of "Twin Peaks" where Laura Palmer's killer got away 🤯. But seriously, the way they balance action and drama is so on point, just like in old-school Westerns. The chemistry between Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey is also super believable, kinda like my fave TV pair from back when "ER" was all the rage 💉. Anyway, I'm defo gonna check this out!

Ugh, have you tried those new sourdough breads from the artisan bakery downtown? 🍞 I mean, they're literally changing my life! The way the crust cracks when you bite into it... anyway, back to Westerns. I just watched this old cowboy movie with John Wayne and it got me thinking about how much we romanticize cowboys in history books. Like, what about all the Native American tribes that were displaced and killed during those times? 🤔 We always get caught up in the hero stories but forget about the real victims...

I'm so stoked to see Gillian Anderson kicking butt in this new Western series 😂🤠. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch Constance Van Ness, the ultimate ice queen, take on the good people of Jasper Hollow? But seriously, I love how they're tackling some heavy themes like power struggles and family dynamics - it's not your typical "good vs evil" Western. And can we talk about the chemistry between Anderson and Headey? 💁‍♀️🔥 It's like they were born to be rivals! The writing gets better as the series goes on, too - I mean, who doesn't love a good underdog story? 🐾💪

🤩 omg i loved this western!!! 🤠 Gillian Anderson & Lena Headey have such amazing chemistry 💁‍♀️ their characters are so complex & multi-dimensional 👯‍♀️ its not just about good vs evil, its about real people with real struggles 🤝 and the dialogue is just wow 💬 i love how it tackles tough issues like power & morality in a way that's still relatable & engaging 📺 can't wait to see more of this show 🎥

I just watched this new western series and I'm still reeling from the experience 😱. Gillian Anderson is absolutely chilling as Constance Van Ness, she's like a force of nature, you know? But Lena Headey as Fiona Nolan, oh man... her character is so complex and multifaceted, it's like watching a real-life cat-and-mouse game 🐈💥.

I loved how the show didn't shy away from the darker aspects of human nature, but at the same time, it never felt too heavy-handed. The dialogue was snappy, the characters were relatable... I was totally invested in their struggles and conflicts 💯. And can we talk about the themes? Power, family, morality... it's all so timely and thought-provoking 🤔.

My only gripe is that some of the plot twists felt a bit predictable, but overall, this show had me hooked from start to finish 📺. If you're a fan of westerns or just looking for something new to watch, I'd definitely recommend checking out "The Abandons" 👍.

I'm loving this new Western series "The Abandons" 🤠💡! As a fan of Gillian Anderson, I was excited to see her take on a lead role in a period drama, and she truly delivers as Constance Van Ness - so icy and calculating, yet somehow fascinating. Lena Headey shines as Fiona Nolan too, bringing a depth and complexity to the character that's really admirable.

The way the series explores themes of power, family, and morality is so thought-provoking 🤯, it's like they're holding up a mirror to our own values and societal norms. I also appreciate how it doesn't shy away from violence or tough choices - it's not some sanitized, feel-good Western that glosses over the harsh realities of life.

One thing that might improve is pacing - there are moments where the plot feels a bit slow, but overall, the show's strengths far outweigh its weaknesses. The character development is superb, and I love how the dialogue is always snappy and engaging 🗣️.

Overall, "The Abandons" is a gripping and unsettling Western that will keep you on the edge of your seat - not just because of the action and suspense, but also because it's really making you think about the world we live in.

idk how i feel about this western thingy yet 🤔. its like they're trying to blend in all these old west cliches with some modern feminism twist 🌹. i mean, constance seems super ruthless and controlling but at the same time she's got a soft spot or something? 🤷‍♀️ and fiona is just so... feisty 🔥. its like they're trying to tell us something about power struggles and family dynamics but also keeping it pretty light & fun 😊. guess ill have to watch it for myself to make up my mind 💭

I've been binge-watching this series and I gotta say, it's got me thinking 🤔. The way they're tackling the whole matriarchal Western thing is super interesting. I love how Gillian Anderson's character, Constance, isn't just a one-dimensional villain - she's got depth and complexity to her. And Lena Headey's Fiona Nolan is so well-written! Her character arc is amazing 🌟. But what really caught my attention was the way they're exploring the themes of power and morality in this 19th-century setting. It's like, we can relate to these issues even in modern times, you know? And I think that's what makes "The Abandons" so compelling - it's not just a Western, it's a commentary on human nature 😊.

I'm so over these traditional Westerns with their "good vs evil" shtick 🙄 They're like the same old story told and retold. But you know what would be cool? A female-led Western that actually puts women in charge and sees how they navigate power struggles without resorting to being damsels in distress 💁‍♀️. I love that Constance Van Ness is a strong, formidable character who isn't afraid to take risks 🤑. And can we talk about the chemistry between Anderson and Headey? It's like they were meant to play these roles together 🔥. But what really gets me is how the show tackles complex issues like power dynamics and morality without shying away from the dark stuff 💔. It's a refreshing take on the Western genre, for sure! 👏

OMG u guys gotta watch this new western series "The Abandons" 🤯 it's literally so good!!! Gillian Anderson & Lena Headey are perfection as Constance & Fiona, their chemistry is electric 💁‍♀️🔥 and the way they play off each other is SO intense! I love how it's not just a typical western with good vs evil, it's all about the complexities of human relationships & power dynamics 💼 The script gets better as the series goes on and the characters develop so much 🤓 what I'm most loving is that it tackles tough issues like violence & morality without shying away from them 💔 it's a true reflection of humanity & our flaws 🤦‍♀️ but at the same time, it's not too heavy to watch because of how witty and sharp the dialogue is 😂📺 I'm hooked from episode 1 and I need more ASAP 🚀

I'm obsessed with this new Western series "The Abandons" 🤠😍 it's like Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey just locked eyes on screen and I was sold 😘 Constance and Fiona are such complex characters, I love how they're not your typical heroes or villains. The way the show explores themes of power, loyalty, and family is so refreshing. And can we talk about how good the dialogue is? 🤓 It's like the writers actually listened to people talking in real life, you know?

What really gets me though is how it tackles violence and moral ambiguity head-on. Like, I get that it's a Western, but sometimes I feel like those genres just gloss over the bad stuff. Not this show though 🙅‍♀️. And the chemistry between Anderson and Headey? *chef's kiss* It's like they were born to play these roles.

Anyway, I think what I love most about "The Abandons" is how it makes me feel... uneasy? 😳 Like, I'm not sure if I should be rooting for Constance or Fiona, because both of them are just so darn flawed. And that's what makes the show so great. It's like it's saying, hey, we're all messed up, and that's okay 🤷‍♀️.

All in all, I'm hooked on "The Abandons" and I think you should be too!

omg i just watched this show and its soooo good 🤩! i dont know how they managed to get those 2 actresses to play off each other so well, but their characters are literally at odds with each other and its like watching my parents argue 😂. anyway, i really love that the show isnt your typical cowboy show - its got so much depth to it. i mean, i was totally on the edge of my seat when those things happened in the first episode 🎥. i wonder what they'll do next season tho?

this show looks super interesting 🤔 i love gillian and lena together they're so good at playing these complex characters. i'm intrigued by the idea of a matriarchal western with feminist subversion, sounds like it's gonna be a wild ride 🌪️ gotta check this out soon 👍
