WW1 toxic compound sprayed on Georgian protesters, BBC evidence suggests

The Georgian government has been accused of using a potent and banned chemical, camite (bromobenzyl cyanide), as a riot control agent during protests in Tbilisi last year. The claims have sparked international concern, with the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Edwards, calling for an investigation into allegations that police used the chemical to disperse protesters.

According to reports, camite was found in the water cannon vehicles used by Georgian riot police during the protests, which were characterized as "brutal" and "excessive" by human rights groups. The chemical is considered a strong irritant and can cause severe health effects, including respiratory problems and skin burns.

The use of camite has been condemned by international observers, who have accused the government of violating human rights laws and subjecting protesters to experimental treatment. The Georgian authorities have denied allegations that they used the chemical, calling them "deeply frivolous" and "absurd".

The protests in Tbilisi, which began in response to allegations of election rigging and increasing authoritarianism, continued in recent weeks despite a significant increase in police presence and tougher measures against demonstrators.

Camite is considered a banned chemical under international law, and its use as a riot control agent has been largely phased out in favor of safer alternatives. The UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, Alice Edwards, has called for an investigation into allegations that police used camite to disperse protesters, and has warned that the use of such chemicals can lead to "serious harm" and "severe suffering".

Wow 🤯, I cant even imagine using a chemical like that on people, its so brutal! Interesting how international observers are speaking out against the Georgian government's actions, it raises questions about accountability and transparency. The use of camite is not only inhumane but also poses serious health risks to protesters. Its worrying to see authoritarian regimes denying allegations and trying to downplay the severity of the situation... 🙅‍♂️

omg lol what is goin on in georgia!! they r literally usin a toxic gas on people!!! i cant even wrap my head around it 🤯🚫 camite is like, super banned everywhere else but georgia is just doin their own thing 🙄 i mean i know protests can get outta hand but using a chemical that can cause skin burns and respiratory probs?!? thats just crazy talk 😷 alice edwards is doin her job tho and calling for an investigation 👮‍♀️ we need to keep an eye on this situation and make sure the georgian gov is held accountable 💯

omg what's going on in georgia?! 🤯 they're literally using a banned chemical as riot control agent?? that's insane! i mean, alice edwards is right, we gotta investigate this ASAP. camite is super toxic and can cause serious health issues... like, respiratory problems and skin burns? no thanks! 🚫 the fact that the gov is denying it is just crazy. they're basically saying protesters are just being dramatic lol. newsflash: protesters have a right to peaceful assembly and not get gassed with camite. this is all very disturbing and i'm definitely keeping an eye on this situation... 👀

OMG u think they r gonna get away w/this? I mean i know its bad but like come on who uses bromobenzyl cyanide in a water cannon lol thats just crazy 🤣. like can u even imagine if that was at a music fest or somethin? the crowd would be literally running for their lives 💥. anyway im not saying georgia did it but omg how r they gonna explain this? i heard its like super hard 2 get rid of b/c it just lingers in ur system forever 🤢. idk wut u guys think tho 🤔

OMG, this is super worrying 🤕... like, what even is camite? Sounds like something out of a horror movie 💀. I'm not surprised international observers are calling out Georgia's gov for this - it's just common sense to treat protesters with respect & dignity. I mean, who uses water cannons filled with banned chemicals on peaceful protesters? 🤯 And now the UN is saying camite can cause serious harm & suffering... like, what have they done?! 🙄 The fact that Georgia denies all allegations but says them are "deeply frivolous" just makes it worse. It's time for some real accountability here 👮‍♀️.
