‘The New Big 5’: Wildlife photography book turns the lens on animals at risk | CNN

"The New Big 5" Shines a Spotlight on Wildlife in Peril, Calls for Global Action

In a groundbreaking photography book, renowned British photographer Graeme Green has redefined the "Big Five," once associated with trophy hunting in Africa, to highlight five majestic animals threatened by human activities. The "New Big 5" initiative, launched in 2021, saw over 50,000 people worldwide vote for their most desirable animal subjects, resulting in a diverse set of winners: elephant, polar bear, lion, gorilla, and tiger.

Green's book, featuring stunning images from celebrated wildlife photographers like Ami Vitale, Steve McCurry, and Paul Nicklen, also includes essays from conservationists and activists such as Jane Goodall. The publication is a call to action on pressing environmental issues like habitat loss, poaching, pollution, and climate change, which imperil these iconic species.

"Call to Earth," the book's title, encapsulates Green's vision: "To get people really focusing on wildlife, thinking about the wildlife they love, thinking about the animals that are at risk." By showcasing breathtaking images of endangered creatures in their natural habitats, the book inspires readers to care and take action.

Conservation experts note that the UN reports a staggering 1 million species facing extinction. The "New Big 5" serves as both an urgent reminder of these losses and a tool for sparking global change. As Goodall emphasizes, "we have a window of time during which we can start to heal some of the harm we have inflicted on the natural world."

The book also sheds light on climate-driven threats, such as the decline of blue whales and bees. Green stresses that these images represent only a small fraction of the broader crisis: "That's only the tip of the iceberg – I could have included thousands of pictures because that's how serious the situation is."

"The New Big 5" has been endorsed by prominent conservationists like Goodall, whose words underscore the power of visual storytelling. As Green and his team aim to heal the damage inflicted on wildlife, they remind us of our responsibility as guardians of this precious planet.

The book "The New Big 5: A Global Photography Project For Endangered Wildlife" is now available in April 2023, offering a poignant reminder that we have a choice: to act or succumb.

🐠 I'm telling you, something fishy is going on here... 🤔 Like, what's with the "New Big 5" initiative? It's just a fancy way of saying "we need more attention for endangered animals"... but what's really behind it? 🤑 Is it just about raising awareness or is there a hidden agenda to control our narrative and push for stricter regulations? 🚫 I'm not buying it... 🙅‍♂️ Those UN reports say 1 million species are on the brink of extinction, but when do we hear anything concrete from governments or corporations about actual solutions? 💸 It's all just a PR stunt to get us hooked and distracted while the real issues slide under the rug. 🚮 Don't get me wrong, I love wildlife too... but let's not be fooled by all this glossy marketing... 😏

I am literally SHOOK by this project... I mean who wouldn't want to look at pictures of these majestic creatures all day? 📸🐘🦁 But seriously, the fact that we're still dealing with an alarming 1 million species facing extinction is just wild 🤯. It's like, can we please take a step back and assess our relationship with nature for once? 🌿 I know conservationists and activists are doing their thing but it feels like we need more visibility, more voices, more people getting involved 📢. And let's be real, the images in this book are STUNNING - who wouldn't want to save a polar bear or a blue whale from extinction? 😭 It's heartbreaking to think about how our actions have put these creatures in danger, but it's also super inspiring to see people like Graeme Green and Jane Goodall fighting for change 💪. Can we PLEASE get more people on board this conservation train? 🚂

🌳💦 I'm all for highlighting the struggles of these incredible animals, but can't help feeling like this is just another band-aid on a much bigger wound 🤕. I mean, 50k people voting for their fave animal subjects isn't gonna solve climate change or habitat loss on its own 🌎. We need concrete actions and policies from governments and corporations to make real progress. That being said, Graeme Green's photography is stunning 💥 and Jane Goodall's words are always a breath of fresh air 🌿. Let's keep the conversation going and hold ourselves accountable for being part of the solution 👍

OMG 🤯 I just saw the cutest video of a quokka on my sister's Instagram and it made me think about how humans can be so mean to animals, like they're taking selfies with polar bears and not thinking about the impact of tourism on their habitats 🌳. And then I started wondering what's going on in Australia right now, did they get any new koala conservation efforts? 🐨😕 anyway, back to this book... I love how it's using photography as a way to spread awareness about climate change and habitat loss... can we make a similar project for marine life? 🌊

I just saw the coolest photography book 📚🐠 called "The New Big 5". It's like, they've taken those old Big Five animals and replaced them with ones that are actually in danger from humans 🤕. Like, have you seen a polar bear up close? 😲 They're so majestic! But it's not all good vibes - the book is also calling out some serious environmental issues like climate change and pollution 🌪️.

I think what I love most about this project is that it's bringing attention to the fact that we're losing a million species in just one year 🐝. It's crazy! And the best part is, the book has some amazing images from famous wildlife photographers and conservationists too 📸🌳.

So yeah, if you care about animals and the planet like I do, this book is def worth checking out. It might make you feel a little uncomfortable, but in a good way? 😬

🌟 just read about the new big 5 and I'm totally moved 🤯! did you know that 1 million species are facing extinction 🐒💀? it's crazy! i mean, the stats are insane... according to a 2020 report by the IPBES (intergovernmental science-platform on biodiversity and ecosystem services), we've lost 60% of all amphibian species since the 1970s 🐜😱. no wonder green is stressing that it's just the tip of the iceberg - there are so many more animals at risk!

anyway, back to the new big 5... have you seen the pics? 📸 they're stunning! i've been looking at some stats on wildlife photography and did you know that 70% of all photos taken by wildlife photographers are of birds 🐦📸. but seriously, the "new big 5" is a great initiative - we need more people raising awareness about conservation issues like habitat loss and climate change 🌪️.

by the way, have you seen the sales figures for this book? 🤔 they're off the charts! over 100k copies sold in just one week 📚👍. maybe it's a wake-up call we need...

🐠 I don't think it's fair to say the "New Big 5" is just about conservationists and activists bashing people for not caring enough about wildlife 🤷‍♂️. Graeme Green's book is actually a call to action, and that's a good thing! 💚 It's inspiring readers to care about animals and take action because, honestly, the situation is pretty dire 🌪️. I mean, 1 million species facing extinction? That's crazy talk! 🤯 But seriously, the "New Big 5" book shows us these amazing creatures in their natural habitats, and that can spark change 💡. Let's not forget the power of visual storytelling – it can move mountains (or at least get people to care more about wildlife) 🌏.

🌎📸 I'm so moved by this project, it's like they're saying 'hey, we've got a problem' and then showing us some gorgeous pics of the animals struggling. It's not just about elephants and polar bears, it's about all these other species that are vanishing before our eyes. Climate change is real, pollution is rampant... we can't just sit back and watch these creatures disappear. The 'New Big 5' is like a wake-up call, reminds us that we're the ones who have to make a change. If we care about these animals, we've got to take action too 🐯💚

just read about this photography book and i'm low-key impressed 🤷‍♂️. the whole 'new big five' thing is pretty genius, redefining it from trophy hunting to highlighting animals in peril 🌎. graeme green's vision of getting people to care & take action through stunning images is really something special 💡. and let's be real, who wouldn't want to see more pics of elephants & tigers? 🐘🐯 but seriously, the stats on species extinction are pretty wild - 1 million & counting 🌳. anyway, can we just get some actual change happening now? 🙄

omg u guys idk how i can even wrap my head around this 🤯 the new big 5 initiative is literally saving wildlife and it's about time!!! I mean, who needs trophy hunting when we can be calling for global action to protect these majestic creatures?!? 🌟 like, elephant poaching is still a thing?!? and polar bears are struggling with climate change?!? it's all so messed up 😩 but Graeme Green's book is literally a game changer – I mean, have you seen those pics?!? they're STUNNING!!! and the essays from Jane Goodall and others are just... *sniffles* ...it's just heartbreaking how much harm we've done to our planet 🌎

anyway, I think what I love most about this initiative is that it's not just about raising awareness (although, obvs, that's a huge part of it 😂), but also about inspiring action. like, we can't just sit around and watch these species disappear – we gotta do something 🙅‍♀️. and honestly, I think "Call to Earth" is the perfect title – it's like, our planet needs us to wake up and take notice 😴

I'm so hyped that this book is out now and I'm gonna go grab a copy ASAP 📚🌟
